Kitwe DC  cautions head teachers

HEAD teachers of various schools in Kitwe have been asked to redeem themselves by producing better results next year or else their respective schools will experience a major shake-up, says district commissioner (DC) Binwell Mpundu.

Mr Mpundu said the poor results which Kitwe district had recorded at Grade 9 level was a disgrace and so it was imperative that head teachers worked hard to post better results next year.

The Kitwe DC expressed concern at the poor results which Kitwe recorded at Grade 9 level in the entire Copperbelt Province when he met head teachers from various schools in the district at Hellen Kaunda High School.

“It is shameful and embarrassing that Kitwe, which is supposed to set the trend in recording better results, is the one which is recording the worst results  in the entire Copperbelt Province. This is unacceptable and you have to redeem yourselves as head teachers,’’ said Mr Mpundu.

He said Government attached great importance to the development of the education sector as evidenced by the construction of schools in various parts of Zambia.

He said the construction of schools, the training and employment of teachers were all indications of Government’s commitment to improving the education sector.

“Government is trying to reduce the teacher/pupil ratio by constructing more schools, training and employing more teachers. So let us work together in improving the education sector. Some of you are lucky that you are employed, while some of your colleagues are still waiting to be posted.

“So for you, who are employed, please do your work because we would not like a situation where you will be retired in national interest because of your failing to perform your duties,” he said.

He said head teachers had a responsibility to properly supervise subordinates such as deputy heads, senior teachers and heads of departments in ensuring that teachers performed as expected.

Mr Mpundu urged teachers in Kitwe to stop politicking and focus on the ‘‘politics of education’’ so that they could record better results and take the district to desirable heights.

Early this week, Kitwe District Education Board secretary Kezela Mwale said he was disappointed that Kitwe recorded the worst results at Grade 9 level in the entire Copperbelt Province.
