Let Zambians run mines, not foreigners – MNT
By KETRA KALUNGA
WE need Zambians to take over the running of mines because we don’t want foreigners to exploit us either under nationalisation or privatisation, the Movement for National Transformation (MNT) has said.
MNT founding President Daniel Shimunza said Zambians should be in charge of their own national assets such as the mines and not foreigners because they have the capacity.
Dr. Shimunza said in an interview that as a country, Zambia should be economical and not careless in allowing national assets to go by letting foreigners run the mines.
“We need Zambians to take over the running of our own national assets and we must be economical and not careless in allowing our assets to go,” he said.
He said the government should come up with a deliberate policy that would empower the local people to effectively run the mines.
Dr. Shimunza called for a reformed mining policy and windfall tax which reflects the minerals that are going out of the country.
“This is our position. We need a mining reform, we need a tax that reflects the actual minerals that we are taking out which is windfall tax, we need Zambians to take over the running of the mines,” he said.
